Top 10 best defenders in the world in 2026

Top best defenders in the world

Defenders do not always get the attention they deserve. Strikers score the goals and midfielders control the game, but it is the defenders who set the foundation for everything. When your back line is solid, your team has a chance in every match.

In the 2025/26 season, the standard of defending across Europe’s top leagues has been exceptional. From Nico Schlotterbeck, commanding the Bundesliga, to Jacobo Ramon, making his mark in Serie A at just 21 years old, this season has produced a remarkable group of defenders.

This list covers the top 10 best defenders in the world right now, based on 2025/26 season data from Sofascore. This list is in no particular order. Every player here deserves their place.

How we selected the top 10 best defenders in the world

Two things determined who made this list: Sofascore ratings for the 2025/26 season, and performance across five key defensive metrics. A player needed to stand out in at least one of these areas to be considered.

  1. True Tackle Success Rate – The percentage of challenges won without committing a foul or being dribbled past. This separates elite tacklers from aggressive ones.
  2. Aerial Win % – Dominance in the air. Elite centre-backs aim for 70% or higher. Winning headers in your own box keep goals off the board.
  3. Progressive Passing and Carries – The ability to break lines and move the ball into the attacking third. Modern defenders need to do more than just defend.
  4. Recoveries – How quickly a defender wins back loose balls or catches up to attackers in transition. This is a big indicator of reading the game.
  5. xGC (Expected Goals Conceded) – A team-based stat that tracks how effectively a defender suppresses high-quality chances for the opposition. The lower the xGC, the better the defender is doing their job.

The Sofascore ratings from the table below also formed part of the selection criteria, as they reflect consistent performance across all matches.

1. Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund)

Nico Schlotterbeck is the highest-rated defender in Europe’s top leagues this season on Sofascore, and it is easy to see why. The 26-year-old German centre-back has been one of the most complete defenders in the Bundesliga this season, combining aerial dominance, aggressive defending, and progressive passing into one package.

At 191cm, Schlotterbeck is physically imposing. He is left-footed, which gives Borussia Dortmund a natural ball-playing option from the left of a back four or back three. He reads the game quickly, steps out to intercept, and is comfortable carrying the ball into midfield.

His performances this season have drawn attention from Europe’s biggest clubs, with multiple reports linking him with a summer move. His contract runs out soon, and Dortmund face a real challenge keeping him. He is also a regular in the German national team setup under coach Julian Nagelsmann.

4 goals from a centre-back is a serious attacking contribution. His 177 tackles won in the Bundesliga alone show how engaged he is in every defensive situation. Schlotterbeck does not wait for attackers to come to him. He goes and wins the ball.

Defenders like Schlotterbeck, who contribute goals, tackles, and clean sheets, are hugely valuable in fantasy football. They score points at both ends of the pitch.

2. Gonçalo Inácio (Sporting CP)

Gonçalo Inácio is the best defender in Portugal and one of the best in Europe. The 24-year-old Sporting CP centre-back has been outstanding in the Primeira Liga and the Champions League this season, with a Sofascore rating of 7.59 across all competitions.

Inácio is known for his composure on the ball, his ability to read the game, and his quality in transition. He carries the ball out from the back with confidence, plays long-range passes accurately, and can step into midfield when needed. He renewed his contract with Sporting CP in December 2025, committing until June 2030.

Gonçalo Inácio was part of the Portugal squad that won the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League and was named in Sporting CP’s Team of the Year for the 2024 and 2025 Liga Portugal seasons. Clubs across Europe have been monitoring him closely, but Sporting have made it clear he is not for sale cheaply.

Inácio is the complete modern centre-back. He is not just a stopper. He is a builder. His ability to carry the ball forward and play the first pass in attacking moves makes him a different kind of defender from most on this list. Sporting CP’s strong Champions League campaign this season has given him the platform to show Europe just how good he is.

3. Federico Dimarco (Inter Milan)

Federico Dimarco is the best left-sided defender in the world right now. The Inter Milan wing-back has been one of the most dangerous players in Serie A this season, combining elite defensive output with the attacking numbers of a winger.

Under the new Inter manager, Cristian Chivu, Dimarco has rediscovered his very best form. Chivu took over from Simone Inzaghi in the summer and has reinvigorated the entire squad, with Dimarco and Alessandro Bastoni particularly benefiting from the change. Inter sits at the top of both Serie A and the Champions League standings this season.

Dimarco has 5 goals in Serie A this season from the left wing-back position. His delivery from set pieces is among the best in world football, and his partnership with Bastoni on the left side of Inter’s back three is one of the most dangerous combinations in Europe. He also carries this form into the Italian national team setup.

Dimarco is the kind of defender who wins fantasy football contests on his own. He scores goals, contributes assists, completes tackles, and is involved in clean sheets. His attacking output from a defensive position makes him one of the highest-value picks for any fantasy platform.

4. Alessandro Bastoni (Inter Milan)

Alessandro Bastoni is the most coveted centre-back in world football. Every top club in Europe wants him. Inter Milan has no intention of selling. That alone tells you everything about the level he is operating at.

The 26-year-old Italian has been exceptional under new manager Cristian Chivu this season. His ball-carrying ability, his composure under pressure, and his instinct to push forward and create overloads make him a completely different kind of defender. He is as comfortable in midfield as he is at centre-back.

Bastoni started the season with a goal in Inter’s opening 5-0 Serie A victory against Torino on August 25, 2025. Analysts have described his partnership with Dimarco on Inter’s left side as one of the best in European club football, and when asked in December about his future, he said he intends to stay in Milan for the foreseeable future.

Assists (Serie A)4

4 assists from a centre-back is extraordinary. Bastoni is a constant threat in the attacking half and a wall at the back. His 191 ball recoveries and 60% tackle success rate show he is not just technical. He wins the ball back, too.

5. Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal)

Gabriel Magalhaes is Arsenal’s defensive destroyer. Whereas his partner, William Saliba, is calm and elegant, Gabriel is aggressive and physical. Together they form the best centre-back partnership in the Premier League right now, and many argue they are the best in world football.

Arsenal are top of the Premier League as of March 2026, and Gabriel has been at the heart of every clean sheet. He leads Arsenal in blocks, clearances, and aerial duels won per game. He scored a 96th-minute winner against Newcastle United in September 2025, showing his attacking threat from set pieces too.

His partnership with Saliba is built on a clear division of roles. Gabriel is the aggressor who goes after the ball, wins it, blocks shots, and dominates the box aerially. Saliba is the sweeper who reads the game and distributes. When Gabriel is missing, Arsenal’s win percentage drops from 64.3% to just 40%.

Gabriel’s aggression and his set-piece threat make him one of the most complete defensive players in the Premier League. He brings goals, aerial dominance, and defensive security every time he plays.

6. Jan Paul van Hecke (Brighton)

Jan Paul van Hecke is the most underrated centre-back in this list. The Brighton defender has been quietly exceptional this season, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.31, placing him among the Premier League’s highest-rated defenders.

Brighton plays a possession-based, high-press system that demands a lot of their defenders in terms of technical ability. Van Hecke thrives in this setup. He is comfortable with the ball, reads the game well, steps out aggressively to intercept, and contributes to Brighton’s build-up with progressive passes.

At 25, he is still developing. But this season has shown that he belongs at the very top level. He is one of the most sought-after young defenders in European football right now, and Brighton will face intense interest in him during the summer window.

Van Hecke’s performances have made Brighton one of the hardest teams to score against in the Premier League this season. His calm presence at the back gives Brighton’s attacking full-backs and midfielders the freedom to push forward, knowing the defence is covered.

7. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

Virgil van Dijk remains one of the best defenders in world football. At 34, he is past the peak of his physical powers, but his reading of the game, his leadership, and his aerial dominance mean he is still performing at a very high level.

Van Dijk captained the Netherlands to a record 72nd time in November 2025, surpassing Frank de Boer’s previous national record in a 4-0 win over Lithuania in their final 2026 World Cup qualifying match. He signed a two-year contract extension with Liverpool in April 2025, keeping him at the club until 2027.

This season has not been Liverpool’s best. They are outside the Champions League places as of 5th March 2026, and Van Dijk has faced some criticism for individual errors. But his quality over 40 matches in all competitions remains elite, and his presence still gives Liverpool a level of defensive organisation that few defenders in the world can match.

Van Dijk leads the Premier League’s top defenders in aerial-duel success and interceptions over recent seasons and continues to do so in 2025/26. Even in a Liverpool side that has struggled for consistency, Van Dijk’s individual level has remained high.

8. Nicolas Otamendi (Benfica)

Nicolas Otamendi is 37 years old and still one of the best centre-backs in European football. The Argentina international has been one of Benfica’s standout performers this season, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.53, higher than Van Dijk and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Otamendi is a warrior at the back. He is aggressive, physical, and has an incredible reading of the game that comes from over a decade at the very top of European football. He led Argentina to back-to-back Copa America titles and a World Cup, and he continues to bring that winning mentality to every game he plays.

Benfica is one of the strongest teams in Portugal this season, and Otamendi has been central to their defensive solidity. His 7.53 Sofascore rating across all competitions makes him one of the best-performing defenders in Europe, regardless of league.

Otamendi’s longevity at this level is remarkable. His Sofascore rating of 7.53 ranks him fourth overall among all defenders in Europe’s top leagues this season. He proves that experience and game-reading can still compete with younger, quicker defenders in 2026.

9. Marc Guehi (Manchester City)

Marc Guehi has had one of the most eventful seasons of any defender on this list. He started it as Crystal Palace’s captain, leading one of the Premier League’s best-performing defences. He ended up at Manchester City in January 2026, in a deal worth a reported £20 million.

Guehi captained Palace to the 2025 FA Cup final, where they defeated Manchester City, scoring three Premier League goals in 2024/25. He scored his first England goal in September 2025, netting in a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over Serbia. Palace fans saw him as one of their most important players.

His move to City came after injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol left Pep Guardiola short of options at centre-back. Guehi made his City debut on January 24 in a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, keeping a clean sheet immediately. On February 14, he scored his first goal for the club in an FA Cup win over Salford City.

Guehi brings exactly what Guardiola needs at City right now. He is composed, reads the game well, and is strong in one-on-one situations. His composure and technical ability make him a natural fit for City’s possession-based style.

Guehi is the kind of new signing worth watching on your fantasy football team. New signings at big clubs often fly under the radar in fantasy for the first few weeks.

10. Jacobo Ramon (Como 1907)

Jacobo Ramon is 21 years old and on this list. If that surprises you, the numbers will quickly change your mind.

The Spanish centre-back joined Como from Real Madrid in July 2025 for just 2.5 million euros, with Madrid retaining a 50% sell-on clause and a buy-back option. Since arriving at Como under Cesc Fabregas, he has been one of the best young defenders in Serie A. He is the same player who scored a 95th-minute winner for Real Madrid against Mallorca in May 2025.

At 196cm, Ramon is an imposing physical presence. He wins aerial duels at a 69.47% rate, which is exceptional for a 21-year-old playing in one of Europe’s most technical leagues. His 7.25 Sofascore rating across 21 appearances is impressive for a young man playing regular Serie A football alongside Nico Paz on one of Italy’s most exciting young teams.

358 ball recoveries are exceptional at any age. At 21, it is extraordinary. Ramon covers huge amounts of ground, wins the ball back quickly, and contributes to Como’s attacking play from the back. He is one of the most complete young defenders in European football right now.

Como’s rise under Cesc Fabregas is one of the most exciting stories in football right now.

Honourable Mentions

1. Jakub Kiwior (FC Porto, on loan from Arsenal) – Sofascore rating: 7.45

Kiwior holds the fifth-highest Sofascore rating among all defenders on this list at 7.45, and he is earning it away from Arsenal. The 25-year-old Polish centre-back joined Porto on a season-long loan on deadline day in September 2025, with an obligation to buy permanently in summer 2026 for a total package worth up to €26 million.

At Porto, Kiwior has been a key part of one of the best defences in Europe this season. Porto have conceded just seven goals in 23 league matches, the best defensive record on the continent at the time of writing. He has made 13 Liga Portugal appearances, earning a Sofascore rating of 7.4 at club level. His composure on the ball, his ability to play out from the back, and his reading of the game have made him one of the best centre-backs in Portugal this season.

2. William Saliba (Arsenal) – Sofascore rating: 6.95

Saliba’s 6.95 rating does not reflect his true importance to Arsenal. He is the quiet engine behind the best centre-back partnership in world football right now. His partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes is a classic combination of two contrasting styles. Gabriel is aggressive and physical. Saliba is calm and technical. Arsenal’s defensive stats deteriorate more sharply without Saliba than without any other player. He averages around 70 passes per 90 minutes at over 93% accuracy, leading Arsenal’s build-up from the back. His lower Sofascore rating compared to Gabriel’s is partly due to his more positional, less confrontational role.

3. Edmond Tapsoba (Bayer Leverkusen) – Sofascore rating: 7.28

Tapsoba is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. The Burkina Faso international modelled his game on John Stones, and that comes through clearly in his confidence and composure in possession. He played the full 90 minutes in each of Leverkusen’s first 14 Bundesliga matchdays before leaving for AFCON 2025 with Burkina Faso. He returned with a muscular injury that sidelined him briefly, but he has been excellent when fit. Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for him after missing out on Marc Guehi to Manchester City.

Frequently asked questions on the top 10 best defenders in the world

Q) Who is the best defender in the world in 2026?

Q) Is Virgil van Dijk still world-class?

A) Yes. Van Dijk’s 7.29 Sofascore rating in 2025/26 shows he is still performing at a very high level at 34 years old. He leads Liverpool defenders in aerial duels and interceptions, and captained the Netherlands to a record 72nd cap in November 2025.

Q) Why is William Saliba not in the top 10?

A) Saliba’s Sofascore rating of 6.95 places him in the honourable mentions, but his importance to Arsenal cannot be understated. Arsenal’s defensive stats drop sharply without him.
